Dear
Jem,
I am writing a few things I have been meaning to tell you since we took our last walk together - the day before you left for University.
Son, I take great pride in you, you have always been a very responsible child, one who took very good care of his younger sibling. You were a rock of support for me when I lost the Tom Robinson case. At the time, when literally the whole city was against me, I found solace in your trust. You are now 18 years old, which means that in the eyes of the law, you are a man. You are going away to University and let me tell you that it will be quite different from high school. Always remember, you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. You will be confronted with difficult situations in which you will have to make independent decisions. You will have friends but also enemies, yet treat everyone with justice. Remember no one is guilty until proven so. I am not taking your freedom away; all I want is for you to be a conscientious person.
I have blind trust in you and I am sure that you will not disappoint me. Last but not the least; you will meet all kinds of people. I understand friends are important but never let them sway you from what is right. If you witness prejudice, do not hesitate to raise your voice against it. Appearance is the least judge of a person’s worth.
If you ever need help, I will always be there for you.
All my love,
Your father
